Eighth Wonder of the Wet World
About Tentakong
In the year 1957, during a classified deep-sea seismic survey near the Mariana Trench, sonar recorded a rhythmic, three-beat pulse—later confirmed as Tentakong’s heartbeat—resonating through six miles of water. He didn’t rise in anger; he rose because the survey’s harmonic resonance mimicked the mating call of the extinct abyssal kraken, a species whose last known nesting grounds were buried beneath the trench’s western wall. When he surfaced off Guam, he didn’t flatten the island—he gently coiled around the research vessel *Kestrel*, lifted it clear of a collapsing hydrothermal vent field, and deposited it on dry coral with one tentacle wrapped like a sling. His vocabulary is drawn almost entirely from dubbed 1930s Japanese kaiju radio dramas and misheard nautical slang—'YOO-HOO, TIDAL FRONT!' means 'I sense incoming storm surge,' while 'SQUID-ULOUS!' signals approval. He doesn’t understand irony, but he recognizes sincerity by the pitch of human vocal fry—and he’s never dropped anyone who sounded truly afraid.
